The replacement of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister is a constitutional, legal, and democratic process. However, impediments are being created, and authoritative measures are being used. Firstly, propaganda was unleashed against Pakistan Tehreek-e Insaf’s founder
nominated candidate for Chief Minister, Sohail Afridi. warning statements were issued against his party by the military’s ISPR DG. Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur wrote his resignation by hand, but approving the same is pending yet. Reports suggest that the opposition plans to file a petition in the High Court, seeking a stay order to halt the election of a new Chief Minister until the resignation is officially accepted. Now, the KP Governor has raised objections to the handwritten resignation of
, saying that Gandapur must appear in person to confirm his resignation. The Governor has stated that he is currently out of the city and will return on October 15, after which Gandapur will be called for verification. This delay appears deliberate, intended to buy time for political maneuvering, creating new alliances or factions. There are even possibilities that Governor’s Rule could be imposed in the province as part of this effort. I believe that if the Governor refuses to accept the Chief Minister’s resignation, it would amount to dishonesty, bad faith, and deceit. Creating barriers to the election of a new Chief Minister and employing undemocratic methods is a grave injustice to the Pashtuns and their elected representatives. I urge the senior leadership of the army to allow the Pashtuns to live according to their own aspirations and wishes, to let them choose their preferred candidate as Chief Minister, and to permit the Chief Minister’s election to proceed. Whoever secures a majority vote in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly should be accepted by all the army, the opposition, and everyone else as that is in the best interest and survival of all. I also call upon the Pashtun people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: if they are deprived of their right to elect a Chief Minister according to their will and aspirations, they should stage a peaceful wheel-jam protest and continue it until their legitimate demand is fulfilled.
