KARACHI:
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has submitted a
memorandum to the United Nations against the delimitation of constituencies in
Karachi. Party leaders have appealed to the international community, especially
the UN, to play their role to ensure free and fair elections in Karachi.
Members of MQM’s central organising committee, led
by Junaid Fahmi, approached the UN headquarters in New York and presented a
memorandum expressing concern that despite being the third largest party in the
country, the MQM was being pushed against the wall.
Calling the order for the delimitation of
constituencies an ‘unjustified initiative’, the members said, “It is aimed at
stealing our party mandate in Karachi.”
The MQM leaders said that delimitation without
conducting a census was not only against the law, but also negated the rules
prescribed by the Election Commission of Pakistan to hold free and fair
elections.
