KARACHI - In what appears to be a surprising move, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement has approached the United Nations with the request that the world body play a role to ensure free and fair elections in Pakistan, which are slated for May 11.A private TV channel reported on Saturday that the MQM’s US Chapter central organiser Junaid Fahmi has submitted to the UN a memorandum against the Election Commission’s decision for delimitation of some constituencies in Karachi. It’s a move to steal the MQM’s mandate, the memorandum says. The ECP is carrying out delimitations in the light of an order passed by the Supreme Court. The MQM has already moved the court against the decision. Its lawyer says that delimitation of constituencies would be illegal after the announcement of the election schedule. Secondly, he thinks, no such exercise is justifiable unless census is conducted across the country. The MQM further says that if at all necessary, the process of delimitations should be carried out all over the country, not just in three constituencies of the cosmopolitan city, as such a step would be discriminatory. The TV reported that the MQM’s initiative could amount to committing contempt of court.
