The catastrophic collapse of a dangerously dilapidated building in the Baghdadi locality of #Lyari, #Karachi, stands as a harrowing tragedy. As per preliminary reports, at least 27 innocent citizens including women and children, have tragically lost their lives, while scores of others have sustained serious injuries. Numerous individuals remain trapped beneath the debris. I extend my deepest condolences and unwavering solidarity to all those afflicted by this heart-rending calamity.
It has come to light that the ill-fated structure had long been in a perilous and structurally unsound condition. I firmly believe that had the Government of #Sindh, in conjunction with its subordinate body, the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), acted with due diligence and foresight to evacuate the residents and proactively demolish the building, this devastating incident could have been entirely averted, and countless precious lives could have been safeguarded. Regrettably, this appalling incident reflects a grave lapse of responsibility and an unforgivable dereliction of duty on the part of the authorities concerned.
I categorically question the Sindh Government: why are structurally compromised buildings, veritable death traps not being promptly razed to protect the lives of citizens? Furthermore, how are multi-storey constructions, rising up to five storeys, being permitted in neighborhoods where statutory regulations only allow for structures not exceeding two floors? Is human life now so cheap that it may be recklessly endangered for the pursuit of monetary gain?
To the bereaved families of all those who perished in this architectural disaster, I offer my heartfelt sympathies and stand in mourning with them.
