KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) leader Farooq Sattar on Sunday appealed British Prime Minister David Cameron to take notice of unlawful and blatant violations of human rights against MQM Chief Altaf Hussain and his colleagues in London.
Addressing a massive MQM rally staged to express solidarity with Altaf Hussain at MA Jinnah Road, Sattar said that Altaf Hussain was being harassed by the British administration. Why Altaf Hussain and MQM leaders are being harassed when neither an FIR has been registered nor a charge has been framed or a trial has taken place against them, he questioned. He asked five questions from the British prime minister over victimisation of Altaf Hussain and said that Cameron should answer these questions in light of the human rights traditions followed in his country.
He asked that how a resident and a national of Britain and European Union could survive without a bank account, and how can he pay his bills and fulfil the needs of his daughter. He asked, “Is it not violation of basic fundamental rights that bank accounts of Altaf Hussain and his colleagues were seized without registering any case against them?
How can the personal items of Altaf Hussain’s daughter be made part of the money laundering case, as the British police has confiscated laptop, ipad, and other accessories of Afza Altaf and has not yet returned them after one-year had passed, he asked. He said that Altaf Hussain had a hobby of collecting coins in jars and asked if the coin collection is a crime in London. Are the coins collected in the jar were of money laundering, he asked. He asked that why it was that on the pressure of some British nationals of the Pakistani origin, having ideological differences with MQM, the British prime minister was going against their traditional good past human rights record.
He said that such move from the British government was against the traditions of the United Kingdom, charter of human rights, and Magna Carta Charter. He termed the issue as politically motivated, and said that MQM would move to the British courts and protest at 10 Downing Street against the behaviour of the British government. Speaking on the occasion, MQM Deputy Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said that the British government should answer the questions raised by Farooq Sattar. He said that Altaf Hussain was victimised for speaking the truth and said that he would not stop telling the truth to the people.
MQM leader Haider Abbas Rizvi demanded the government to stop the extra-judicial killings of the MQM activists and said that one more activist was extra-judicially killed on Sunday. He demanded immediate release of the missing activists, and said that the party is playing a crucial role in stabilising the country. MQM leader Nabil Gabol said that the people of Karachi are victimised for supporting Altaf Hussain. He said that major development projects were launched in Punjab.
Karachiites have to face 14-hour load-shedding and water shortage, he said, adding that the government should initiate the metro bus service and projects to overcome the water crisis in the city. He said that majority of the taxes are collected from Karachi, and if these facilities would not be given to the city then they would be forced to stop paying taxes to the government which would create problems for the authorities in Islamabad.
