Open Letter from Altaf Hussain to Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir
Ensure the release of MQM’s Pashtun leader Anwar Khan Tareen
#ReleaseAnwarKhanTareen
Honourable,
Chief of Army Staff,
General Hafiz Asim Munir,
Assalam-O Ala'ikum,
Aadab
I would like to bring to your attention that Anwar Khan Tareen, a senior Pashtun leader of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), was arrested on the night of February 21, 2025, at 10 PM when the paramilitary Rangers raided his house in #Karachi and took him to an undisclosed location. However, even after 5 days, his whereabouts remain unknown. His wife filed a petition in the Sindh High Court against his unlawful arrest, and during the hearing on February 26, the honourable judge had fixed the hearing on that petition for March 18.
General Sahib!
Anwar Khan Tareen is the only custodian of his family, and his wife and children are in severe mental distress and anguish. The fact is that he is a respectable citizen and that he never faced any legal charges. This is the first time that law enforcement raided his house and abducted without any lawful charge.
It is true that he is a senior Pashtun leader of MQM, and that PTM (Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement) has formed a Jirga with various political parties for negotiations with the government, in which MQM nominated Anwar Khan Tareen as its representative. It is also true that I had appealed to my supporters to contribute a symbolic "one rupee" fund to show solidarity and support for me. Anwar Khan Tareen, like other members, participated in that campaign of #ISupportAltafHussain
It wouldn't be unnecessary to clarify that Anwar Khan Tareen is a law-abiding citizen and has never been involved in any unlawful activity.
General Sahib!
With utmost respect, I request you to issue directives for the immediate release of Anwar Khan Tareen, ensuring his release and safeguarding his family from further mental anguish.
Additionally, I also urge you to issue orders for the release of MQM worker Muhammad Kamran Kabari, who was arrested on December 9, 2024, on the occasion of Martyrs' Day, as well as other
members who have been arrested and gone missing in recent days.
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Altaf Hussain,
Founder and Leader,
Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM)
