London; 16 December 2020
Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) leader Altaf Hussain has said that the military elite ruling the country in 1971 was responsible for the break-up of Pakistan on December 16, 1971 and East Pakistan becoming Bangladesh. In a statement on the Fall of Dhaka Day, Mr. Altaf Hussain said that the ruling military leadership of Pakistan, instead of giving political, democratic, economic and social rights to the Bengali nation of East Pakistan, called them traitors. Taking a constitutional, legal and democratic path, they won the 1970 general elections by a landslide, but the then ruling military leadership, instead of handing over the government to them, launched a military operation against them.
They were brutally massacred and their voices were suppressed by military force. Millions of Bengali mothers and sisters were raped. The Bengalis put up armed resistance against these barbaric atrocities. When Indian Army came in front of Pakistani Army, they surrendered to the Indian army.
Mr. Altaf Hussain said that the annexation of Pakistan and the transformation of East Pakistan into Bangladesh was the result of injustices, atrocities and barbaric atrocities committed by the army against the Bengali people since the establishment of Pakistan which could not be denied. Even after the break-up of Pakistan, the ruling elite of Pakistan is not ashamed. Even today, anti-people policies like East Pakistan are being worked on in Balochistan, Sindh, Pakhtunkhwa, tribal areas and Gilgit-Baltistan.And the nations seeking their rights are being crushed by state power. Mr. Altaf Hussain said that if the rulers do not take learn lesson and continue to follow the policy of using state power like East Pakistan, then tragedies like East Pakistan could happen again for which the whole nation should be ready.
