Senator Nasreen Jalil terms victimization of girls by Jirga `un-Islamic’

Condemning the victimization of Kalam Valley’s four girls in the name of oppressive and obsolete custom `Sawara’ by a so-called Jirga, Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s Coordination Committee Member and Senator Nasreen Jalil has said that such a self-made custom was not only un-Islamic and unlawful but a sheer violation of Women’s basic rights.
In a statement issued here on Wednesday, Ms Jalil deplored that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s act of not taking any action against the so-called Jirga that victimized the girls under the repressive and age-old customs clearly indicated that not only the Jirga system was running parallel to judicial system in the province but women’s rights were also being usurped through their victimization under the repressive customs.
She said that the holding of Jirga in the presence of judicial system was a highly condemnable act and demanded of the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak, to initiate against those responsible for convening the so-called Jirga and those involved in victimizing the four girls under the repressive customs of Sawara.
The MQM leader also urged them to provide justice to the four girls in the light of the country’s Constitution and laws. Ends…
