UN body asks Pakistan to answer questions over extrajudicial killing of MQM worker
The UN Committee against Torture publishes is findings 

LONDON  – The United Nations Committee against Torture has published its latest findings and has specifically raised the issue of the extrajudicial killing of MQM worker Aftab Ahmad. Pakistan is a signatory to the UN Convention prohibiting torture on detainees.

Mr Ahmad had died last year due to serious injuries paramilitary Rangers had inflicted on him during custody. His body showed visible signs of third degree torture. Following intense criticism of Rangers in social media, the former Pakistan army chief General Raheel Sharif had promised a swift inquiry into this incident, but failed to honour his words. 

This is one of several reports recently published by international human rights bodies highlighting cases of paramilitary Rangers' illegal and inhuman activities against MQM. 

The UN body's latest report covers the cases of torture in the countries it examined during its latest session from 18 April to 12 May 2017. Pakistan is in the company of countries with dubious human rights record such as Afghanistan, Argentina, Bahrain, Lebanon and Republic of Korea.

The findings look into as to how the respective State is implementing the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

The Committee specifically referred to the extra judicial killing of MQM member Aftab Ahmed in May 2016 whilst in the custody of the Pakistan Rangers. The Committee have requested more details about the inquiry from the Government of Pakistan
