 Posted on: 2/19/2016
The Muttahida Quami Movement has started a 4-day symbolic hunger strike at Karachi Press Club from 19th February to 22nd February to protest against unconstitutional and undemocratic ban on speeches, news, views and interviews of MQM Chief Mr. Altaf Hussain.
Senior Deputy Convener Dr Farooq Sattar, Deputy Conveners Kahiful Wara, Nasreen Jalil, members Coordination Committee Zareen Majeed, Arshad Hasan, CEC In-charge Furqan Attiyab, MNAs, MPAs, LG representatives, workers and supports were enthusiastically participating in the protest. The participants also displayed banners and placards to support MQM Chief Mr. Altaf Hussain demanding to lift ban of his media appearances.
Talking to the journalists at a media briefing Senior Deputy Convener MQM’s Coordination Committee Dr Farooq Sattar said that the 4-day symbolic hunger strike would register people’s protest on the ban. He said that it was a unique incident in the history when a political and liberal leader was deprived of his fundamental rights to freedom of speech by the court.
Dr Farooq Sattar said the symbolic hunger strike is a token to show solidarity with Altaf Hussain against his media ban by the Lahore High Court. He said that his media blackout was sheer violence of human rights to freedom speech and the Article-19 of the Constitution.
He said MQM devises a protest plan to call an attention of the authorities to the issue and it should be resolved immediately according to the Constitution and rights to freedom of speech. He said that the ban caused serious violation and deprivation of people’s rights to interact with their beloved leader.
The Deputy Convener said the news anchors are directed to read without mentioning the name of MQM Chief Mr. Altaf Hussain. He also appealed media outlets, other social and human rights organizations to raise their voices against such discrimination and violation of human rights to freedom of speech.
Various delegations of political, social, religious and journalists organizations visited the symbolic hunger strike camp to show solidarity with MQM and its chief Mr. Altaf Hussain. MQM would continue the hunger strike for next three days up to 21st February to render attention of the authorities to the issue.
