Public Referendum is the beginning of the new chapter of Democracy in Pakistan
 Posted on: 6/20/2013
The Deputy Convener of the Central Coordination Committee Dr.Khalid Maqbool Siddiqi has said that today’s Public Referendum of 20th June 2013 is the beginning of the new chapter of democracy in Pakistan. MQM has laid the foundation of strong Pakistan and stable democracy by including the opinion of masses in important decision making process. All the political parties of the country should follow the role model of MQM. Many such instances of stable democratic values could be observed since the time MQM practically started its political journey. He expressed these views in a press briefing at Nine Zero on the occasion of “Public Referendum 2013” conducted to seek public opinion if MQM should join the Sindh government or not?
Dr. Khalid Maqbool said that only few days back soon after getting the invitation from Sindh government to join them we had committed before media in this regard to seek public and workers opinion whether to join the government or not and take our decision in the light of the majority votes.
Dr.Khalid Maqbool said that media is the witness that people enthusiastically participated in today’s Referendum. MQM has introduced a strong and stable democratic system and its practical proof was the amazing and pleasant participation of the public in this Referendum throughout the Sindh. He said that Ex-Member of National Assembly Dr.Abdul Qadir Khanzada is appointed as the Chief of Election Commission of this Public Referendum while renowned intellectual Long Khan Channa, Professor and poet Khawaja Rafique Anjum and Hameed-Uz-Zafar are the members of the election commissioner and they will do the counting of the votes.
He said that today both the camera’s eyes and people of Pakistan has observed the practical proof of “masses involvement” in entire Sindh including Karachi. Today’s Referendum conducted to seek public opinion whether to join the government or not is the practical beginning of the new chapter of the democracy in Pakistan. MQM has set a unique example of real, durable and participatory democracy, which is a role model for other political parties of the country to include public participation on the verge of difficult decision making.
Dr.Khalid Maqbool Siddiqi while thanking to all the Haq Parast workers and peoples who participated in Referendum and used their right of self-determination said that “you have not only assisted us but also helped Pakistan and democracy. Afterwards replying to the journalist’s questions Dr. Khalid said that people are the true judge and the decision will be taken on basis of people’s mandate. He said that 50 lakh ballot papers were printed but it seems after watching public interest that more papers will be required. MQM has given significance to the public opinion rather than accepting any pressure to join government or not. MQM will take its final decision now in this context after taking into consideration the majority public opinion.
