MQM challenges altering of constituencies in Karachi just before general elections
Posted on: 3/25/2013
Deputy Convener of the Co-ordination Committee Dr Farooq Sattar files petition in the Sindh High Court
Deputy Convener of the Co-ordination Committee of Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) Dr Farooq Sattar has challenged the illegal and unconstitutional changing of several electoral constituencies only in Karachi by the Election Commission of Pakistan. Dr Sattar filed a petition in the Sindh High Court challenging the redrawing of several constituencies in Karachi on Monday morning. Barrister Farogh Nasim was also present on the occasion.
Talking to the media representatives outside the SHC, Dr Sattar said that the MQM had raised legal and constitutional issues in the petition as the new delimitations had been done after the announcement of the election schedule. He said that the honourable court had been prayed to stop the operation on the notification issued by the Election Commission and to declare it null and void.
Dr Sattar said that new delimitations of constituencies cannot take place after the announcement of the election schedule. If the constituencies were being redrawn under section 10 – A of the Delimitation Act, suggestions should have been invited from all stakeholders, and the process should have been properly advertised.
Dr Sattar said that the action of the Election Commission had raised questions about its integrity. He said that the people of Karachi have been punished by changing the constituencies for their constant support to the MQM.
Dr Sattar said that the altering of electoral boundaries was an attempt to steal the mandate of the MQM. He said that the electoral rolls were also not being displayed in Karachi even after the door-to-door verification process.
Speaking on the occasion Barrister Nasim said that the SHC was approached for the implementation of the order of the Supreme Court of Pakistan regarding fresh delimitation of electoral constituencies according to law. Altering of constituencies in Karachi was in violation of the order passed by the Supreme Court.
