MQM APPEALS TO AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL TO SAVE THE LIFE OF ITS DETAINED WORKER

 London: November 27, 1998

The Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) has appealed to the Amnesty International to save the life of Mr Zikr Ur Rehman 28 son of Habib Ul Hasan, Sector incharge of MQM Sukkur, Sindh. Mr. Rehman was arrested by the Police while he was travelling in the train on way to Quetta on 3 November 1998. He was then brought back to Sukkur, from where his brothers and father were also arrested on fabricated charges. His brothers and father were later released on bail after undergoing brutal torture, but police refused to divulge the whereabouts of Zikr Ur Rehman.

The MQM has recorded its concern over the security of Mr. Zikr Ur Rehman to the Amnesty International by way of letter sent to them on November 26, 1998, because the Police Authorities in Pakistan are now blatantly denying the arrest of Mr. Rehman. This is most disturbing, because more than thirty cases of MQM missing workers have not been resolved for the last three years.

The MQM has urged the Amnesty International to take this matter urgently with the Government of Pakistan in order to save the life of Mr. Zikr Ur Rehman.
