TARGETED KILLINGS OF MQM WORKERS AND SUPPORTERS CONTINUE…

September 20, 1998

Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) is the third largest political party of Pakistan and the second largest in the province of Sindh. Targeted killings of MQM workers and supporters continue in the urban centres of Sindh, especially Karachi. In two separate incidents three more MQM workers and supporters were ruthlessly murdered in armed attacks carried out by trained assailants whereas several other have been arrested illegally by the Law Enforcement Agencies.

I-- DETAILS OF KILLINGS:

A-- On September 18, 1998, at around 11.30 a.m., Fareed Ahmed Sheikh was going to his office in a Suzuki car along with his brother-in-law, Mohammad Mashkoor, when some unidentified terrorists, who are usually the personnel of the Intelligence Agencies and their terrorists "Haqiqi", intercepted their car and opened fire upon them. Fareed Ahmed Sheikh received two bullets on his chest and two in the neck. As a result he died on the spot while his brother-in-law received bullets in his chest and spinal chord. He was immediately taken to the Civil Hospital. At around 6.35 p.m., Mohammad Mashkoor succumbed to his injuries while being operated.

1-- Fareed Ahmed Sheikh, age: 40 year, son of Sultan Ahmed Sheikh, resident of R-5, Jat Lines, Sector A-One, Karachi. He was a supporter of MQM Unit 52, Sector Lines Area.

2-- Mohammad Mashkoor, age: 25 year, son of Mohammad Usman, resident of R-5, Jat Lines, Sector A-One, Lines Area, Karachi. He was a very active supporter of MQM Labour Division.

B-- On September 16, 1998, at around 8 a.m., Amjad Ali was sleeping in his house when some unknown terrorists broke into the house and kidnapped him at gunpoint. He was brutally tortured and shot four times in the head. His dead body bearing visible marks of torture was found near Nishan-e-Haider Chowk.

Amjad Ali, age: 22 year, son of Ahmed Ali, resident of House No. 220, 14/E, Orangi Town, Karachi. He was a supporter of MQM Unit 121, Sector Orangi Town.

C-- Mirza Anwar Baig 55, son of Mirza Zakir Hussain, resident of House No. 18, Sector 4-D, Islam Nagar, Orangi Town, Karachi. He was a worker of MQM Unit 129, Sector Qasbah Aligarh.

On September 19, 1998, at around 7.15 p.m., he was sitting in his factory when some unknown armed persons arrived and asked for a huge sum of money. When he refused to comply, the terrorists opened fire upon him. He was shot in the chest and was shifted to the intensive care unit of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. On September 20, 1998, at around 6 p.m., he succumbed to his injuries.

II-- DETAILS OF ARREST

20 September 1998: At around 2 a.m., the personnel of Saeedabad Police Station raided the house (A-3, Saeedabad, Baldia Town) of Shakeel, an MQM worker, in Baldia Town. In his absence they arrested his two brothers who are supporters of the party. Their details are:

1- Mohammad Wasim 25, son of Qazi Abdul Majeed.

2- Mohammad Hashim 23, son of Qazi Abdul Majeed.

19 September 1998: Amir Hussain 25, son of Arif Hussain, resident of House No. 5-CL, Lines Area, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 197, Sector Lines Area. At around 11.30 p.m., he was arrested by the personnel of Risala Police Station from his place of hiding.

19 September 1998: The personnel of Korangi Police Station led by Saulat Niazi raided the house of MQM workers and arrested Asad and Shehzad.

1- Asad 25, son of Akhtar, resident of House No. 330, Sector 5-B, Korangi, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 79, Sector Korangi.

2- Shehzad 25, son of Abdul Sattar, resident of House No. 230, D-Area, Korangi No. 6, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 79, Sector Korangi.

19 September 1998: Mohammad Rafi 26, son of Abdul Mateen, resident of House No. 296, Gali No. 6, Yousuf Goth, Surjani Town, Karachi. His father is the member of MQM Elders Wing of Unit 10, Sector New Karachi. At around 2.30 p.m., the personnel of Surjani Town Police Station raided his house and arrested him.

18 September 1998: Javed 28, son of Mulla Sawab, resident of Liaquatabad, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM New Karachi. At around 5.30 p.m., he was standing near his house when the Sub Inspector Shehzad arrived in a yellow cab and arrested him. He was immediately blindfolded and taken to unknown destination. When his family contacted the Surjani Police Station, they were not allowed to meet with Javed.

18 September 1998: Yousuf Patni 24, son of Qasim Patni, resident of House No. 563-735 Patni Mohalla, Baldia Town, Karachi. He is a worker of MQM Unit 116, Sector Baldia Town. At around 10 p.m., he was arrested from near the MQM Sector Office in Baldia Town by the personnel of Baldia Town Police Station.

16 September 1998: Syed Sadaqat Ali 24, son of Karamat Ali, resident of D-One Apartment, Iqbal Colony, Karachi. He is an office bearer of MQM Unit 26, Sector PIB Colony. On 16 September 1998, at around 4 a.m., the personnel of CIA Police and FIA raided his house and arrested him.
