A 70 YEAR OLD WOMAN DIED AS A RESULT OF UNBEARABLE SHOCK DURING THE SIEGE AND SEARCH OPERATIONS IN LIAQUATABAD AREA OF KARACHI

Karachi: July 23, 1998

Since the early hours of 23 July 198, the Paramilitary Rangers have cordoned off several areas of Liaquatabad in Karachi. These areas include Sikanderabad, Gharibabad, Bandhani Colony, Israel Chowk, Qasimabad, Azam Nagar, Jewellers Marker and Blocks 7, 8, 9 and 10. It is being reported that heavy firing by the Paramilitary Rangers is continuing. It was announced that every citizen should remain indoors and are strictly not even allowed to open their windows.

• Due to this heavy and indiscriminate firing by the Law Enforcers a 70 year old woman namely Mst. Bano wife of Bashir Uddin died of heart attack. The Paramilitary Rangers entered into her house, dragged the male members of the family and started torturing them in front of her. When this old frail lady protested and begged to the Paramilitary Rangers to spare her family members, she too was beaten. As a result she had a severe heart attack and died on the spot.
• A 35 year old woman namely Parveen wife of Nasir was shot in the abdomen by the Paramilitary Rangers.
• Abdul Khaliq son of Nawab Abul Sattar, a supporter of MQM was shot in the jaw by the Paramilitary Rangers.

Similarly several MQM workers, supporters and their family members have been arrested during the siege and search operation in Korangi, Defence, PIB and Burns Road areas of Karachi.
