JOINT COMMUNIQUÉ OF MQM AND
PML ISSUED ON 18 APRIL 1998, AT 8:00 P.M. FROM THE MQM
INTERNATIONAL SECRETARIAT, LONDON
In a meeting spread over three days between PML and the MQM at
the MQM International Secretariat, London, detailed discussions
took place over the Accord signed between the two parties on 21
February 1997. While showing concern on the non-implementation of
some of the provisions of the Agreement and the abolition of the
No GO Areas, the MQM impressed on the Government side the need to
implement the Agreement in toto, and in letter and in spirit, so
that the alliance between the two parties continues to flourish.
The Government side briefed the MQM over the state of the
implementation of the Accord and identified the problems which
have contributed to non-implementation in certain areas. While
renewing its resolve to follow and implement the Accord with
renewed commitment, the PML asked and MQM assured its
co-operation, support and understanding to help strengthen the
alliance in the larger interest of the country, the province and
the people.
Detailed discussions spread over 14 hours took place so as to
ensure that the impediments in the implementation of the
Agreement are removed and the grievances that MQM suffered are
redressed. Both the parties resolved to work together in the
larger interest of democracy and the political process. It was
decided to continue the co-operation and to remain in alliance
despite certain differences over the slow speed of implementation
and in compliance of the Accord.
The Government renewed its commitment to support the MQM's
demands and assured the MQM that it would spare no efforts in the
solution of the issues and implementation of the Accord.
Both the parties resolved to work together for the good
governance of the province of Sindh, its development and the
prosperity of its people.
