Municipal emergency enforced in Karachi by Dr. Farooq Sattar
KARACHI: A 'municipal emergency' enforced in Karachi initially on an experimental basis for a period of three months became formally functional from Tuesday. The emergency was declared by Senior Sindh Minister Dr Farooq Sattar at a press conference. "We will achieve the targets set before us by the end of April," Dr Farooq Sattar hoped while talking to the newsmen on Tuesday. Under the municipal emergency the man and mechanical power of KMC, five DMCs and KWSB had been pooled for deployment for the purpose of construction and repair of roads, improvement of sewerage system and removal of garbage dumps. "Some 70,000 open manholes will be covered and some 50 sewerage lines will be replaced during the next 3 months," he said. Dr Farooq Sattar said that 15 major delapidated roads were being taken in hand for construction under a 'long lasting' road programme costing some Rs 300 million.
