Gunmen kill six, including five soldiers, in
Pakistan AFP
QUETTA, Pakistan (AFP) -
Five off-duty soldiers and a civilian were killed when unidentified gunmen on
motorbikes opened fire on a car in Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province,
the police and military said. The military described the attack as an act of
"terrorism" but said it had not been specifically aimed at the army.
The six were in a civilian car near the garrison city of Khuzdar, some 310
kilometers (195 miles) south of the provincial capital Quetta, when three men
armed with Kalashnikov rifles opened fire on them, local police said on Sunday.
Five died at the scene and another died in hospital, a police spokesman said.
The assailants fled on their motorbikes, he said. Military spokesman Major
General Shaukat Sultan said in Islamaband that the dead included five soldiers
and one civilian. He said two other people, including a soldier, were injured in
the attack. "It was a normal act of terrorism and not really army
specific," Sultan told AFP. "They were off-duty soldiers in their
civilian dress," he said. Paramilitary troops have come under attack in the
past in tribal-dominated Baluchistan with such incidents called
"routine" by officials who link them to tribal demands for better
compensation for use of their land and more jobs.
Three bombs rock Gwadar - The
Nation
QUETTA (AFP) - Three home-made bombs exploded in Gwadar early
Saturday but caused no casualties or damage, police said.
‘Three explosions took place early Saturday morning, but caused no casualties
or damage,’ police officer Abdus Sattar Lasi said.
He said the first bomb went off at 6:45 am near the boundary wall of a police
station. Another explosive device detonated 30 minutes later close to Gwadar
deep sea port and a third exploded 30 minutes after that in a dust bin near a
mosque. He said the devices were home-made ‘bottle-bombs.’ No organisation
has claimed responsibility for the blasts, but officials believe these are
linked to an ongoing campaign by people angry over the recruitment of employees
from other provinces for the port project. Gwadar lies some 580 kilometres
southwest of Quetta on the Arabian Sea coast. Three Chinese from the China
Engineering Harbour Co. were killed and nine others were wounded near the
multi-million dollar Gwadar seaport project on May 4 when an explosive-laden car
blew up as a van carrying 12 Chinese engineers and technicians passed by.
Three soldiers injured in explosion : A report from Islamabad adds: three
soldiers were injured when their vehicle hit explosives buried in the road in a
tribal area near the Afghan border, a military spokesman said Saturday. ‘Three
soldiers were injured while travelling in North Waziristan when their vehicle
passed over explosives planted in the road,’ Major General Shaukat Sultan
said. Witnesses, however, said one solider was killed and six seriously injured
when a rocket hit their vehicle near Razmak. Sultan denied these reports. The
area where the attack took place borders the South Waziristan district where
troops have been hunting Al-Qaeda-linked militants for over three months. In
June forces backed by jets and helicopters took over the Shakai valley in a
major operation that left 65 foreign fighters and their local supporters dead.
Some 18 troops were killed in the June assault, during which the army said it
dismantled an Al-Qaeda training camp and some militant hideouts. The authorities
have been pressing tribes to expel hundreds of Chechen and Uzbek fighters who
sneaked into the region after the US-led offensive ousted Afghanistan’s
hardline Taliban regime in the wake of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks in
the United States.

Four die as tribesmen, police
clash in Chaman
The News - By our correspondent - QUETTA:
The paramilitary troops have been placed on a high alert in Chaman following a
bloody clash between police and tribesmen at Bogra Road which claimed four
lives, including a policeman, official sources said on Saturday. Tension gripped
the city after the arrest of Haji Jailani Khan Achakzai, a tribal chieftain and
ANP’s Central Joint Secretary on Friday evening, in a sedition case. Armed
tribesmen took positions in Old Chaman area and suspended the traffic for
several hours at the Quetta-Chaman highway as a protest. On Saturday, the city
was closed with a shutter-down strike and the personnel of the law-enforcement
agencies kept patrolling the area to maintain law and order. The tribesmen also
closed the international highway at Roz Zharaband, stranding hundreds of
vehicles, carrying fresh fruit from Kandahar in Afghanistan to Pakistan. Reports
reaching here from Chaman said a clash took place between armed men, who were
stated to be loyal to Haji Jailani Khan Achakzai, and a police team. Four
persons, including a policeman and three others were killed. The dead were
identified as Havildar Abdul Rahim, Sawar Khan, Momin Jan and Saadullah. After
the incident, the tribesmen blocked the international highways and Chaman was
closed with a shutter-down strike as security forces patrolled the area. The
incident created tension in the area and the armed tribesmen burnt tires. Later,
the administration held talks with the tribesmen and opened the road for traffic
on Saturday afternoon.
3 tribesmen, constable killed
in clash
Daily Dawn - By Amanullah Kasi - QUETTA, July 31: Three tribesmen
belonging to the Awami National Party and a police head constable were killed
and three others injured in an exchange of fire in Chaman late Friday night. The
clash between the police and the tribesmen began after the police arrested an
ANP leader of the area in connection with a treason case. Awami National Party
(ANP) spokesman, while condemning the killing of the three party members and the
arrest of Malik Jailani Khan Achakzai, Central Joint Secretary of the party in
Chaman, stated that his party believed in non-violence but would not accept
arrest and killing of the innocent people. The spokesman claimed that the police
on Friday midnight opened fire on the tribesmen, killing Shah Sawar Achakzai,
Sadaullah Achakzai and Momin Achakzai besides injuring two others. He claimed
the head constable was killed in the firing of the police. But police sources in
Chaman asserted that armed tribesmen opened indiscriminate fire on the police
party in Bogra Road, killing Head Constable of the Balochistan Reserves Police
Abdul Rahim and injuring another constable. About civilian casualties, the
police claimed they were killed by tribesmen's firing. To protest the incident,
a complete strike was observed by the people of the area on Saturday on the call
of tribal elders to condemn the killing of the three tribesmen. The angry people
blocked the National Highway for some time, suspending vehicular traffic between
Quetta and Chaman. Similarly, a Chaman-bound passenger train was stopped near
Shalabagh. The spokesman said the administration had given them an assurance
that the arrested leader would be released and the families of the victims would
be paid Rs200,000 compensation for each victim. After the negotiations the
protestors ended their protest and the traffic was restored
