Muttahida celebrates Mr. Altaf Hussain’s 50th birthday
By our correspondent, The News, 18 September 2003
KARACHI: A large number of workers and sympathisers of Muttahida Quami Movement expressed unflinching faith in their leader Altaf Hussain on Tuesday night, while celebrating his golden jubilee here. The central gathering for expressing ‘Tajdeed-e-Ahd-e-Wafa’ (reaffirmation of loyalty) on the 50th birthday of Mr. Altaf Hussain was held at Nine-Zero, Azizabad, attended by members of Muttahida ad-hoc committee, its MPAs, MNAs, advisors, workers and the public. People including teenagers and children were seen dancing on the tune of Muttahida’s songs. Enthusiasm among the gathering gained momentum when leader of Muttahida Quami Movement Mr. Altaf Hussain started his telephonic address. During his speech, the leader of Muttahida paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the movement and their family members besides workers who were continuing with their struggle and had remained with the party even under unfavorable circumstances. He vowed to continue his struggle for the rights of oppressed people and said that the movement would continue till all the sufferings of the masses were removed and their due rights achieved. He said: "Though the establishment had tried several times to kill me but the prayers of my mothers, sisters, elders and comrades always saved me and today I have reached the age of 50." Mr. Altaf Hussain took oath from workers to work for the party with loyalty and complete dedication. He asked party workers to keep away from dishonesty, robbery and extortion and completely abide by the party’s discipline. He also advised them to respect elders, ladies, teachers and minorities and acquire education besides working hard to achieve their desired goals. He said that life is given once and every man is mortal, therefore we should not fall victims to greed and serve people who were suffering from poverty, miseries and difficulties. He congratulated the party workers on his golden jubilee and urged them to be an integral part of the organisation by adopting the approach of realism and pragmatism. Besides Karachi, programmes for celebrating the 50th birthday of Mr. Altaf Hussain were held in Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Mirpur Khas, Sukkur, Nawabshah and Larkana. The golden jubilee of Mr. Altaf Hussain was also celebrated in the International Secretariat of the party in London. According to a statement issued from London, the birthday of leader of Muttahida Quami Movement was celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm. The programme was attended by convenor Muttahida Dr Imran Farooq, wife of Altaf Hussain Faiza Altaf, their daughter Afzaa and others. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sardar Ali Muhammad Maher on Wednesday talked to Altaf Hussain over telephone and congratulated him on his 50th birthday. He prayed for his long life and health. Altaf assured Maher that his party would continue supporting him.
MQM celebrates Mr. Altaf Hussain’s birthday
By Khurrum Anis, The Daily Times, 18 September 2003
KARACHI: Senators, ministers, workers, supporters and sympathizers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) celebrated the 50th birthday of their leader and founder of MQM, Altaf Hussain in the city on Wednesday. The date was September 17th, 2003. The time was four in the morning and zealots of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) were busy decorating the Jinnah Ground in Azizabad. They looked tired and should be. A bystander (obviously a worker of the party) informed this reporter and his friends that the boys, most of who were in their early 20s, had been working round the clock, “throughout the day,” he said. It was ironic but an innate feeling suggested that Azizabad was open to one and all. Security was well managed with police mobiles and Rangers personnel patrolling the area, and all around boys were either zooming here and there. They were bringing stuff to the main venue, Jinnah Ground, or going to get an important coordinator to make sure everything is being out in order. The road leading to Nine Zero, party headquarters was also glittering with thousands of yellow bulbs. So powerful was the combined power of that yellowish glow, that for a second one felt as if he was walking under the city’s fog-lights (when they’re working that is). The entire block surrounding Altaf Hussain’s house seemed to be in a mood to celebrate, something that would not have been the case in mid-nineties. There were families (women and children) strolling on the roads (and that too at this innate hour), boys sitting at very corner of the area and dingy tea-cafes open for those wanting to refresh. The ‘corner boys’ looked suspicious but they give an innocent look, perhaps themselves wondering what a semi-grey shade Charade was doing in their area at this hour. But the suspicion was mutual. One fellow colleague suggested that the speed of the car be maintained at, “not too fast and not too slow,” he said. “We’re here to check out the preparations for Altaf Hussain’s birthday not to get 10 bikes following us about,” he continued. Before, as the car passed the locked offices of Khidmat-e-Khalq Foundation (KKF), the charitable hand of MQM, some of the friends were wondering whether there is a birthday being celebrated or not. But all assertions and aversions were pot to rest, once the car moved towards the Nine Zero road. As mentioned above the by-lane leading from the main road to the connecting lane of Nine Zero was covered under arches. The refreshing outlook of this reminded of the days when Karachi was a city of party and not otherwise. The arches were still incomplete but they nevertheless looked impressive. The residence blocks all along the lane were also garbed under the bulbs. Boys sitting outside MQM’s media cell, situated on the same road, also looked ready for action. Boys were sitting outside it, donning baseball caps with MQM inscribed on it. The caps were also glowing and it was later that a friend in the car wondered whether the boy would have parted ways with it. His head was covered with a Manchester United woollen toupee. “My brother it all the way from England but that cap looked more healthier than mine,” he said. The Jinnah Ground, where Altaf Hussain was to address his supporters and workers was also shining. Besides the 1000-watt white bulbs of the ground itself, there were more lights installed in it. Hundreds of newly stitched white, green and reds (MQM flags) were flying high on the bamboo masts. In a distance the almost 50-foot stage was nearing completion and boys were seen relaxing on the ground.
