KARACHI BELONGS TO THE MQM AND NOT TO THE RELIGIOUS EXTREMISTS – ALTAF HUSSAIN

Karachi – 24 September 2001

Mr Altaf Hussain, MQM Founder and Leader, has said that Karachi is the city of liberal-minded people who are against terrorism.  Karachi does not support the religious extremists and by the Grace of Almighty Allah; the people of Karachi will prove that they stand united on the MQM platform with the international community in combating terrorism, in the forthcoming MQM Rally on 26 September 2001.  Mr Hussain was addressing the workers of All Pakistan Mohajirs Students Organisation (APMSO), MQM Ladies Wing and workers belonging to the District Central Karachi at the Khursheed Begum Memorial Hall in Azizabad, Karachi, Pakistan.

Mr Hussain said that after the terrorist attacks upon America, the entire world is now focussing upon Pakistan.  Even at this juncture, certain agencies are conspiring to mislead the world that Karachi, the largest city of Pakistan, does not belong to MQM-loving people but it is the city of so-called religious organisations and religious extremists.  He said that in all the consecutive General Elections of 1988, 1990, 1993 and 1997, the people have repeatedly bestowed their full confidence in the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM).

Mr Hussain said that the people of Karachi and Sindh believe in religious harmony and not in religious extremism.  They are liberal-minded and democratic people.  He said that we would like to show the world that people of Sindh stand united and would not allow any conspiracy against Sindh.

Once again declaring solidarity with the international community, Mr Hussain said that we are against all sorts of terrorism because we too are victims of terrorism and thousands of our companions have been martyred.  Addressing the international community, Mr Hussain said, “Differentiate between your friends and foes; and understand the problems faced by the deprived people of Sindh.  He reiterated that the people of Sindh stand united on the MQM platform; and they are against terrorism and extremism.

Addressing the workers Mr Hussain said, “You have remained determined throughout the struggle of MQM and once again you have to face a test.  You have to practically prove to the world that Karachi and Sindh belongs to us and not to the religious extremists.”   Mr Hussain emphasised to the workers to maintain discipline, exercise restraint and act sensibly not emotionally.

Mr Hussain appealed to all the ethno-linguistic communities, mothers, sisters, youth, elders, intellectuals, poets and people from all walks of life to participate in the rally of 26 September 2001.

Government should allow us to organise rallies against terrorism – Altaf Hussain
Mr Hussain said that the so-called religious and jihadi organisations have been activated to hold demonstrations and rallies by the Establishment to hoodwink the public in the name of Islam.  When the government has allowed the religious organisations to take out processions then it should also allow everyone to exercise its democratic right to protest in favour or against any issue.  And, therefore, the government should allow us to organise rallies against terrorism.............Full Story
