Unprecedented Rally held in Karachi
The
"Thanksgiving Rally" on the adoption of the Protection of Women Rights Bill
2006 held under the auspice of Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) today in
Karachi was an unprecedented event in the history of Pakistan. According to
independent news and also exhibited in the photographs of the electronic and
print media, the attendance was incalculable and considered as an "Ocean of
the People".
This “Historical Rally” was
organised to celebrate the emancipation of the women in the country which
was hindered due to the obscurantist and parochial “Hudood” Ordinance
promulgated during the Army Dictator late General Zia-ul-Huq in collusion
with draconian religious extremists and fanatical forces that had and are
still trying to Talibanise the country.
Mr Altaf Hussain, during his speech said
that today is the beginning of the genuine emancipation of women, victory of
liberal and progressive forces and a crushing defeat of the obscurantist
forces which in collusion with rogue elements are trying to make the country
their hostage.
Mr Altaf Hussain further added that this “great rally is a referendum
against the religious extremism and he assured that the people of Pakistan
under the aegis of MQM will eliminate the religious extremism and
fanaticism from the country and each and every worker of the MQM will
continue his and her struggle against the religious extremism”.
