DR FAROOQ SATTAR, MEMBER OF THE CO-ORDINATION COMMITTEE OF THE MQM VOLUNTARILY PRESENTED HIMSELF TO THE GOVERNMENT FOR ARREST FOR ACCOUNTABILITY.

Dr Farooq Sattar, Member of the Co-ordination Committee of Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM), its Parliamentary Leader in the suspended Provincial Assembly of Sindh and the former Mayor of Karachi has voluntarily presented himself to the Government for arrest for Accountability. Today, on 26th. November 1999, in a Press Conference, held at the Karachi Press Club, Dr Farooq Sattar, graphically presented facts and figures along with impeccable record of his business conducted while he was the Provincial Minister for Local Bodies and Katchi Abadi during the previous coalition Government of MQM and PML (Pakistan Muslim League). MQM quit the coalition on 30th. October 1998 in protest against the undemocratic suspension of the democratically elected Provincial Assembly of Sindh and promulgation of "Governor Rule" in the province by the deposed Prime Minister, Mohammad Nawaz Sharif.
Today, a standard has been set in the history of Pakistan, no elected representative of any party or politician in Pakistan has ever presented himself or herself for Accountability.
The Western Democratic and OIC countries should send their teams to monitor the case of Dr Farooq Sattar to ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done. The international observers should also ensure that Dr Sattar is not tortured or coerced to make confessional statements while in custody of the Government.
It should be noted that neither Dr Farooq Sattar’s name was included in the list of three hundred fifty-five persons defaulted on loans or any other list released by the Government nor the Government issued any formal charge sheet before the raid on Dr Sattar's house for his arrest on 17th November 1999 or to date, before his voluntary arrest.
