NEWS UPDATE -- MQM ELECTION 2002 MQM ELECTION COMMITTEE DECLARED RESULTS OF INTRA PARTY ELECTIONS 1 August 2002 The Election Committee at a press conference held today at Nine Zero, the Central Office of the MQM said that the intra party elections of the MQM at federal, provincial and local level all over the country were transparent and thousands of MQM workers freely used their right to vote. The Election Committee announced the schedule of the party elections on 23 July 2002. According to that schedule, by 26 July 2002 enlistment of voters was to be completed. On 27 July 2002 candidates from all over the country filed their nomination papers at federal, provincial and local level. On 28 July scrutiny for objections was completed and final list of candidates was announced. The list of 41 candidates was announced for 25 seats of the Central Coordination Committee. At the provincial level, for Punjab 14 candidates for 7 seats, for NWFP 7 candidates for 5 seats, for Balochistan 11 candidates for 5 seats were announced. At local level, 16 candidates for the 8 seats in Karachi Organising Committee, for Zonal Committee of Mirpurkhas 11 candidates for 6 seats, for Sanghar 11 candidates for 5 seats and for Nawabshah 11 candidates for 6 seats were finalised. At the end of polling on 30 July 2002, counting of votes was started. For that purpose 80 members staff was deployed. The Election Committee said that as a result of the process of fair, free and impartial intra party elections of Muttahida Quami Movement they were declaring the results of the candidates. These elections were held on the basis of proportional representation. The candidates who received the highest number of votes were elected to the highest positions, whereas those who got less votes were appointed on position proportionately in descending order.

IN PARTY ELECTION SINDHI MEMBERS ARE ALSO ELECTED According to the MQM party election results, besides Urdu speaking elected candidates in the co-ordination committee, there are Sindhi speaking members also. According to the results in the election of Co-ordination Committee, Ali Ahmed Brohi secured 9351, similarly in the election of Zonal Committee of Nawabshah Long Khan Channa secured 690 votes and Noor Mohammad Gul of Mirpurkhas secured 660 votes. PARTY ELECTION TURN OUT WAS 91% According to the Election Committee, the turn out was 91%. There were 14,000 registered voters out of which 13,000 cast their votes.

However, a large number of voters at many polling stations who have entered before 8.00 p.m., were allowed to cast their votes. The members of Election Committee, Presiding Officers and Polling Agents have started collecting ballot boxes.
5.00 p.m. (PST) Karachi (Sindh Province): It's been a day of MQM discipline, says an old lady, who was anxious to see the proceedings of today's election. According to the details received from the election committee that there are so many workers who are just waiting to cast their vote. Journalists were very amazed to see this process. According to the details polling is on its peak.
Hyderabad (Sindh Province): According to the details, the voters are still just waiting for their turn to cast their votes. MQM Deputy Convenor Mr. Aftab Ahmed Sheikh also cast his vote and visited Hyderabad Zone.
Mirpurkhas (Sindh Province): According to the details, those voters are still standing in discipline to cast their vote. Hundreds of votes have been cast so far.
Sanghar (Sindh Province): According to the details hundreds of voters are still in queue to cast their votes.

Beside MQM workers, supporters are very happy to see this kind of enthusiasm and discipline among the workers.

Sukker (Sindh Province): According to the last information, more than 400 workers have been cast their votes.

Quetta (Balochistan Province): According to the details, the supporters of Muttahida Quami Movement are enjoying this election due to its fair and free basis. One of Baloch supporter expressed his views that "He has never seen such kind of election, by any political party, like MQM has conducted".

SUKKER (SINDH PROVINCE): According to the report taken by election committee, so far more than 200 votes have been cast. A large number of Sindhi speaking workers also coming from interior Sindh to cast their vote.
NAWABSHAH (SINDH PROVINCE): According to the report, so far more than 150 votes have cast.

MULTAN (PUNJAB PROVINCE): According to the election committee there are still queues of workers cast to their vote. Journalists are visiting at polling booths and one of them expressed his views that this election just look like general elections.

Election Process in Hyderabad: The polling for the election of Central Coordination Committee has started at 10.00 a.m., and main centre for polling bas been made at Bhai Khan Chaari. Five booths for male workers and one booth for female workers have been set-up. A large number of MQM workers were gathered at Bhai Khan Chaari with full enthusiasm to cast their vote. The workers are queued to cast their votes and according to the last reports more than 80 vote have been casted.
Election Process in Sukker: The polling have started here at 10.00 a.m., and polling station was made at Dhaak Road. A large number of MQM workers have been standing in long queues to cast their votes. According to the details so far 150 vote have been casted.
Election Process in Sanghar: The polling started at 10.00 a.m., for the election of Central Coordination Committee and Sanghar Zonal Committee. A large numbers of workers were gathered to cast their vote and three polling booths have been set-up. According to the last reports more than 50 votes have been casted.
Election Process in Nawabshah: For Central Coordination Committee and Local level election, the polling have started at 10.00 a.m., and three polling booths were made at Malik Colony. According to the last reports more than 70 votes have been casted.
Election Process in Punjab: Main centre for polling has been made in Multan. A large number of MQM workers have gathered to cast their vote. Journalists are also present. The voting started at 10.30 a.m., and according to the last report more than 50 voter has cast their vote.
Election Process in NWFP: Main centre for vote casting has been made in Bannu. A large number of MQM workers have been gathered to cast their vote and polling has begun at time.
Election Process in Balochistan: Main centre for vote casting has been made in Quetta. According to the details the workers have started to gather at polling station and so far 29 votes has been cast.
Election Process: Tod ay the MQM workers are casting their votes all over Pakistan for 25-Member Central Coordination Committee, 8-Member Karachi Organising Committee, 6-Member Nawabshah and Mirpurkhas Zonal Committee, 5-Member Sanghar Zonal Committee, 5-Member Provincial Committees for NWFP and Balochistan and 7-Member Provincial Committee for Punjab.
