We have been informing you that exercising their democratic right the MQM legislatures are on Hunger Strike opposite the Karachi Press Club for the past several days in protest against the near-genocide of the Mohajir nation generally and the "Identity Elimination" of the MQM leaders, office bearers, workers, sympathisers and their relatives commissioned by the Nawaz Sharif Government. The MQM has also waged its protest internationally.
The Police and other law enforcers have already raided and arrested the MQM legislatures and supporters staging the Hunger Strike in Karachi and forcibly evicted them by ransacking the Camp and looting the equipment to intimidate the legislatures and supporters. Yesterday, on 28th July 1999, the Government of Nawaz Sharif "switched on" its terrorists’ group to unleash violence and killings in the city of Karachi. This is being carried out with the view to portray the Hunger Strike as violent and use this as an excuse to carry out mass arrests of the MQM workers, supporters and their relatives. We fear that very soon the legislatures may also be arrested.
As per reports received, twenty-two MQM workers have been arrested in Mirpurkhas City during nightlong siege and search operations conducted by the Police. Scores of MQM workers have been arrested in Karachi and Hyderabad during the nightlong raids. In Hyderabad, Shuja, Joint Secretary of the Central Committee of the APMSO (All Pakistan Mohajir Students Organisation) has also been arrested.
However, despite all the State terrorism, the Hunger Strike in Karachi is going on undeterred. Today, Mr Tariq Javed, MQM Member of the National Assembly and Member of the MQM Co-ordination Committee and Mr Asim Kabir, MQM Member of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh along with others are observing the Hunger Strike opposite the Karachi Press Club.
