MQM RESTARTS THE HUNGER STRIKE AFTER BRUTAL CRACKDOWN OF LAST NIGHT IN KARACHI, PAKISTAN
28 July 1999
London time: 2 p.m.
Today, after the brutal crackdown of the law enforcement agencies upon the hunger strike camp, the MQM restarted the hunger strike campaign opposite the Karachi Press Club to protest against the atrocities, discrimination and victimisation against the Mohajir Nation. Senator Nasreen Jalil, Deputy Convenor of the MQM, Nawab Mirza Advocate, former Speaker Sindh Assembly and Dr. Nishat Mallick, Member National Assembly Pakistan are observing the hunger strike. Members of MQM Elders Wing, Ladies Wing and other workers and supporters have joined the MQM leaders and elected representatives in the hunger strike.
After the attack of the law enforcement agencies at the MQM Hunger Strike Camp in the early hours, heavy contingent of Police, Paramilitary Rangers and other law enforcers have been deployed near the hunger strike camp to harass the hunger strikers. Senior Superintendent Police and Deputy Commissioner Karachi of the Administration are threatening to the MQM leadership to end their hunger strike campaign.
MQM has commenced its global campaign of peaceful protests and has been observing hunger strike throughout the world. These protests are to attract the attention of international community towards the atrocities carried out upon the Mohajir Nation. Since yesterday, the MQM started its hunger strike campaign in Karachi, Sindh, to protest against the gross violation of human rights. These hunger strikes are being observed in London, South Africa, United States of America, Canada, Belgium, Germany and other parts of the world.
This inhuman and brutal action of the law enforcement agencies is the continuation of the policy of the Nawaz Sharif Government to physically subjugate the entire Mohajir Nation and to crush its political representative party, the MQM. For this purpose the Federal Government has appointed the notorious Mr. Syed Ghaus Ali Shah as the Chief Advisor Sindh.
Since the establishment of the unconstitutional and illegal Anti Terrorist Courts (ATC) in Karachi, more than 44 innocent MQM workers have been unlawfully sentenced to death. Since October 1998, more than 20 MQM workers have been tortured to death in the custody of Police. Raids and arrests of innocent MQM workers, supporters and their relatives have become the order of the day.
