YET ANOTHER MQM WORKER KILLED IN CUSTODY IN KARACHI
M. Anwar, son of Mohammad Sabir Uddin, 32 years and a resident of House No. A-461, Jail Road, Usmania Colony, Karachi, was arrested on 13th. January 1999 and killed in the custody in the early hour of 14th. January 1999 by the Police, who inflicted brutal and inhuman torture on the victim to force him to make a "pre-written" confessional statement. He left behind a widow, three children, widowed mother, six brothers and two sisters. He was the sole breadwinner of the family. He was a worker of P I B Colony Sector, Karachi.
According to the wife’s account, one Naeem phoned the victim at around 8.00 p.m. (Pakistan Time) on 13th. January 1999 and asked him to come to "Nipa Roundabout", Karachi. His whereabouts was unknown ever since. The family had feared his arrests.
The hospital authorities said that the body of M. Anwar was brought by one S H O (Station House Officer) Azam Baloch at 05.45 a.m. on 14th. January 1999 to the Jinnah Hospital, Karachi. It was later confirmed by the M L O (Medico-legal Officer) Dr Rafiq Memon. The post mortem was carried out from 10.00 a.m. until 11.45 a.m. by Dr Asif Jan Qazi, who withheld the result of the post mortem. We are still awaiting details of the intensity of torture and laceration marks. It was later learnt that he was arrested by the CIA (Crime Investigation Agency) and Jamshed Quarters Police, Karachi.
