ROLE OF WOMEN IN PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE COUNTRY CANNOT BE IGNORED: NASRIN JALIL

MQM PUBLIC MEETING IN KARACHI WOULD GO A LONG WAY IN EMPOWERING THE WOMEN

KARACHI: 15TH FEBRUARY 2012

Member of the Co-ordination Committee of Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) Mrs Nasrin Jalil has said that the women public meeting of the MQM in Karachi with the theme “Empowered Women, Strong Pakistan” would go a long way in emancipating the women from oppressive laws and social customs. She said this while addressing a press conference in Bagh-i-Jinnah, adjacent to the Quaid’s Mazar, in which she explained upcoming women meeting.

She was flanked by member of the Co-ordination committee Ms Mumtaz Anwer, In-charge of the Women Wing of the MQM Ms Kishwar Zahra, MNA Khush Bakht Shujaat, Senator Shirala Mallick and other office-bearers of the Women Wing of the MQM.

Mrs Jalil said that the MQM had united women on a platform and enabled them to play their role in the progress and development of the country. She said that the women constituted over 52 per cent of the population and their role cannot be ignored.

Mrs Jalil said that karo-kari, marriage of women with the Holy Quran and other such oppressive customs against women were an ugly blot on the face of the society. Evil practices of the Days of Ignorance were common and women were falling victims of karo-kari, honour-killing and vani. Religious extremism and intolerance were weakening Pakistan and it was the need of the time to promote harmony and toleration for saving the country from collapsing.

Mrs Jalil said that the MQM had created an awakening in the women and it was actively working for abolishing the black law against the them. She said that the society that demeaned its women was ultimately destroyed.

Mrs Jalil appealed to the women to participate in the public meeting in large numbers and make it a historic success.
