Muttahida appeals for generous donations

KARACHI, Aug 3: The coordination committee of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement has appealed to the people of Sindh, especially philanthropists, to provide maximum possible relief goods and donations to the MQM's relief camps for the rehabilitation of those affected by rains and floods.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, the committee pointed out that while scores of people lost their lives, hundreds of thousands of others had been rendered homeless by the natural calamity in Sindh. It said that the rains and floods had also inflicted a heavy loss of property on the helpless people as countless villages had been inundated.

In this hour of trial and tribulation, it added, it was everybody's religious obligation to come forward and donate generously in cash and kind to the relief funds.

According to the statement, on the MQM chief Altaf Hussain's directive,the committee had set up camps in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Sanghar, Khairpur, Larkana, Dadu and far flung areas of Sindh where food, medicine and other relief goods were being provided to the affected people.

The senior deputy convener of the coordination committee, Dr Farooq Sattar, deputy convener Nasreen Jalil and provincial minister Shoaib Bokhari visited camps set up by the MQM workers at different schools and supervised collection and onward supply of relief goods.

Muttahida MNA wants govt help for party's relief efforts

KARACHI: Muttahida Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Dr Aamir Liaquat Hussain has urged the city government to assist his party in its ongoing relief campaign launched to help the rain affectees, especially those residing on the banks of rivers' banks.

During a four-hour visit to the rain-hit areas of Karachi, including Ranchhore Lines and Lyari on Tuesday, Dr Aamir called for a joint struggle to rescue the
affectees of the natural disaster.

The Muttahida MNA also took part in his party's relief work and inquired into the problems being faced by the respective residents. He was accompanied by the sector those in-charge of the Muttahida's Lyari and Ranchhore Lines chapters. He inspected the dykes along the Lyari river bank and found it to be in a dilapidated condition. He was informed that the dykes needed immediate repairs the problems could well multiply.

Aamir also went to the residences of those on the banks of the Lyari and found that the residents were forced to live out in the open as the rainwater had inundated their houses. Water was found accumulated in the houses of the affectees while the rainwater also submerged the streets.

A similar situation was witnessed at Kharadar, Nanakwara, Ramaswami, Marwari Lane, Gazdarabad, Jubilee and adjacent areas.

Dr Aamir and the Muttahida workers on the occasion helped the residents drain the rainwater from their houses. He also participated in the relief work at Dhobi Ghaat.

The MNA also talked to the army volunteers on the occasion and appreciated their efforts to provide relief to the masses.

"The Muttahida Qaumi Movement believes in pragmatism and it continues serving people in the light of the teaching and philosophy of its leader, Altaf Husain," Aamir said, while talking to the affectees of the affected areas.Dr Aamir would also visit different areas on Wednesday, according to the MNA's spokesman.

Muttahida sets up relief camps

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement has set up relief camps in different city areas for the collection of relief goods to the rain-affected people.

According to the Muttahida announcement, the party leaders, ministers and legislators visited the relief camps set up at Liaquatabad, Landhi, Korangi, Malir, Clifton, Orangi Town, Qasba Colony, Qaddafi chowk, Water Pump, and other areas.

These leaders also received complaints about the sewerage problems and removal of garbage. The people also complained of the attitude of the city and town Nazims and their failure to provide relief to the people during the monsoon.

The members of the Sindh Assembly of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement criticised the city government for covering up their corruption and failure.

They stated that in fact city Nazim Naimatullah was seeing the problems of the people through the eyes of the Jamaat-e-Islami and was blaming the Muttahida.

They demanded of the federal government to take note of the alleged corruption of the Nazim and the town Nazims, and hold an inquiry.

Meanwhile, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement sent two truckloads of relief goods to the affected people of Mithi while party workers were busy collecting relief goods for the affected citizens of Karachi.

New rain relief team proposed

KARACHI, July 28: Sindh Minister for planning and development Syed Shoaib Ahmed Bukhari has proposed formation of a relief team to be headed by the Sindh Local Government Minister Mohammad Hussain and comprising MNAs and MPAs to take steps for resettlement, provision of food, clothes and other necessities of life to rain-affected people of the province.

Moreover, the minister in a summary to Sindh Chief Minister, Sardar Ali Muhammad Khan Mahar, has recommended Rs5 million each for badly- affected district of Badin, Tharparker (Mithi, Deplo) and Ibrahim Haidery and Malir in Karachi.

While Rs10 million provisional relief for Hyderabad is also proposed so that immediate relief could be provided to the affectees.

The minister said that the district governments and Nazims be issued directives to extend full co-operation to the relief teams of MNAs and MPAs so that maximum relief could be provided to the affected people through better co-operation and co-ordination of all relevant authorities
