Muttahida invites US envoy to
visit protest camp
By our correspondent
KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has invited the American diplomats to visit party's peaceful hunger strikers' camp outside Karachi Press Club (KPC).
Informed sources told The News that MQM leaders invited the US diplomats so that they could personally meet the MQM workers and listen to their grievances with particular reference to state oppression and atrocities.
Sources said that a delegation of MQM including Senator Aftab Ahmed Sheikh, Senator Nasreen Jaleel, Dr Muhammad Farooq Sattar, Muttahida parliamentary party leader and MNA Kunwar Khalid Yunus was invited on Thursday at the luncheon at the US Consulate, Karachi.
On this occasion, Muttahida leaders requested the Acting Consul General of the United States, Bruce Nelson, to take notice of human rights violations in Karachi like it acted in the case of Bosnia, Kosovo and other places in the world.
Sources said that the Acting Consul General expressed concern over the political and law and order situation in Sindh but said that United States did not want to intervene in these affairs as these were purely internal issues.
Sources said that the acting consul general of the United States was scheduled to visit MQM headquarters - Nine-Zero - but the government did not give security clearance to him so the MQM delegation was invited at a lunch at the US Consulate in Karachi.
